Q: How big are the displays?
A: The merchant tablet display is 10" 1280x800 resolution and the consumer screen is 5" 854x480 resolution, both supporting capacitive touch.
Q: How would the two cameras be used?
A: Both are on the merchant facing display. One is front facing, while the other is bottom facing. The front facing camera can be used for 1D barcode scanning and/or helpdesk support. The bottom facing camera is for 2D barcode scanning, typically for loyalty applications.
Q: What wireless capabilities does Carbon have?
A: Both the Carbon device and the stand support Bluetooth/Wifi, so wired connections are not required. Carbon does not support WAN connectivity (GPRS, 3G, 4G). Built-in WiFi connectivity provides usage flexibility throughout the store, while Bluetooth allows beaconing capability, for customer identification and offer redemption.
Q: What payment types can Carbon support?
A: The consumer-facing screen, or terminal, is powered by our new Engage platform, and includes a 5-inch capacitive touch media display, which is ideal for customer interaction. This secure terminal can accept all payment types, including Magstripe, EMV, and Contactless, as well as supporting secure PIN entry and signature capture.
Q: Does the stand need to be connected using Ethernet?
A: No, while Ethernet connectivity is supported, the stand can also be connected wirelessly to a Wifi access point, which provides the ultimate flexibility when positioning the device in merchant the location.
Q: What infrastructure is required in the merchant location?
A: The merchant location must have broadband access and a Wifi access point/router in order for Carbon to operate. Both the stand and Carbon device are Wifi stations, so they each must connect to the Wifi access point/router independently during wireless operation. (Note: the stand could alternatively connect to an access point/router via Ethernet, but it does not function as a Wifi access point in this scenario).
Q: Can a peripheral PIN pad be connected to Carbon?
A: Yes, a PIN pad can be connected via the USB ports on the stand, but the Carbon device would require the corresponding driver to be loaded. For those merchants that desire a PIN pad with tactile keypad support, we plan to support the new Engage P200 via USB plug-in. While this is not planned for the pilot, we expect to have driver and application support following the full Commerce Platform 2.0 release in early 2017.
Q: Can Carbon print receipts?
A: Carbon can print receipts either when docked or when mobile (using Wifi) via the high speed printer that is built in to the stand, which supports an 80mm paper roll.
Q: Can a cash drawer be connected?
A: There is a connection for an optional cash drawer in the stand. And for peripheral connectivity, such as for dedicated bar code readers, there are 4 USB ports underneath – with all of this in one nice, compact package that takes up a minimal amount of valuable counter space.
Q: When the Carbon unit is mobile, how long will the battery last?
A: The battery is designed to provide up to 6 hours of mobile usage. This mobile usage could include line busting, inventory management, and price checking among other use cases.
Q: Can Carbon be charged without the stand?
A: The Carbon kit is designed for Carbon to be charged in the stand. However, a micro USB power supply accessory is available for purchase to allow the Carbon unit to be charged directly without the stand.
Q: How are applications loaded onto Carbon?
A: All non-payment applications for Carbon, both Android and Engage, will be available only on the Verifone Commerce Platform’s App Marketplace. Payment applications are pre-loaded, prior to deployment.
Q: How much memory is in Carbon?
A: The consumer side secure terminal has 512MB of Flash and 512MB of SDRAM. The merchant facing Android tablet has 16GB of Flash and 1GB of SDRAM.
